Summer Sabbath
As a family we celebrate a weekly Sabbath on the 7th day of the week and in a few days we will be entering the 7th month of our calendar year and I'm personally calling a Summer Sabbath. I believe that there is something within each of us that desperately needs a Sabbath. Yet, as much as we need one it is a fight in more ways than one to take one.
Even though the specifics of our day to day lives might differ, I know I'm not alone in the fact that there is never a day when I have checked off everything that needs to be done on a TO DO List.
Life just never seems to stop and give me a total day off it seems, yet I know I need to stop.
I was created to stop.
To take a Sabbath. To rest.
As much as my life screams for need of Sabbath rest, I know I have to actively pursue one.
I still have responsibilities the month of July, but I'm carving out rest. I hope you will too.
Don't get stuck on what that looks like in your life. It will look different for each of us and it should. I do challenge you to do something different though. I have found that sometimes I need a change of view. Take your Bible or an inspirational book and go somewhere you never go and read it. It could be as simple as a corner of your backyard where you never go. But I have found new spaces give me space to think new thoughts and see new things.
Try it! :)
I love how Paul encourages the believers in the book of Hebrews to enter that rest...
Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:11-16 (EVS)
Paul knows that left to our own thoughts and ways we can easily veer off course. But as we quiet ourselves with the Word and let it bring correction where needed and breathe fresh life into our lives, we are refreshed.
Take rest my friend...
and together let's celebrate a bountiful Fall crop!
