Sacred Spaces

We often link darkness with fear or something to be avoided, as if it holds only uncertainty or harm. Yet, beautiful things happen in the dark—seeds take root, stars unveil their quiet brilliance, and the world finds rest. The stillness of darkness can feel unsettling, tempting us to reach for distractions or flood the space with light, trying to escape what seems like nothingness. In these moments, our thoughts may whisper lies, convincing us we’re alone, unseen, or lost in the shadows.

Psalm 139:7-12 reminds us we are never beyond the reach of God’s presence:

Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit? to be out of your sight? If I climb to the sky, you’re there! If I go underground, you’re there! If I flew on morning’s wings to the far western horizon, You’d find me in a minute—you’re already there waiting! Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark! At night I’m immersed in the light!”

It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you; night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.

Even in the deepest shadows, we are never abandoned—held close by the One who sees us completely and knows us intimately. Darkness is not the absence of God but a sacred space where His presence softly reveals itself, reminding us that He is always near.
